The politics of the work get forgotten but the philosophy of the universal virtues does not.

Examples of this are Pushkin, and Goya and even Reifenstahl. Their work may have been to serve a certain political end but rose above it. My next post will be on how this works.Erik Bootsmahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03749834088028424348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6458688.post-74776859202365482262011-10-19T09:57:08.579-04:002011-10-19T09:57:08.579-04:00Erik: Good writing! your interests and mine cert...Erik: Good writing! your interests and mine certainly do converge. As an aside, I have to tell you that the architectural renderings on your website are excellent.
To the point at hand: In the post "How Art Is Philosophical" in the first sentance you use the term "political art" and state that purely political art is rightly labeled propaganda. Well I think that although some works are propaganda, even designed for that purpose, they, none-the-less, do trancend to the philosophical. Joseph Beuys' work of the 1940's comes to mind. Goya himself was definatley 'political' in his actions, as well as his art. For that matter so was Andy Warhol. How about the Bolshevic poets [Pushkin, perhaps] of the turn of the last century? Michaelangelo gave his heavenly figures decidedly human musculature; considered politically incorrect at the time.
I like the conclusions you draw at the end of your post. We are in agreement that true art is universal, and deals ultimately with the human soul. Some artworks, do just that and serve a political purpose as well. I did a few myself!
Regards,
(uncle) BobBob Forsthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18058886981337502837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6458688.post-67696834975355036852010-11-08T17:57:00.434-05:002010-11-08T17:57:00.434-05:00I love this church, except for the gold gridded ce...I love this church, except for the gold gridded ceiling, which feels paper thin due to the grids clashing at the seams.Samuel John Limahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10564084368277778423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6458688.post-38113151728348935562010-10-25T13:01:00.942-04:002010-10-25T13:01:00.942-04:00What a great place! What a great place!Samuel John Limahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10564084368277778423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6458688.post-63895568107408255732010-10-25T10:43:17.661-04:002010-10-25T10:43:17.661-04:00I think they should worry about getting their peop...I think they should worry about getting their people into homes instead of living in tents, and dying of cholera. There are very few architects today capable of making something as powerful and refined as the McMillan solution (which even subtly addresses the fact that the WaMo is not centered by placing a pool where the cross axis with the White House and Jefferson Memorial lays), and while I would like to see those who are capable attempt this competition, the deck is automatically stacked against a classical entry (even in D.C.!) because of who will likely be on the jury, and it may not be worth the effort.Samuel John Limahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10564084368277778423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6458688.post-38044821206051898392010-09-18T19:51:06.608-04:002010-09-18T19:51:06.608-04:00I fully agree that the Presidential Palace and Cat...I fully agree that the Presidential Palace and Cathedral must be rebuilt. They represent the cultural identity of a people. They are among the most powerful physical symbols of the Haitian Nation.

At the same time a carefully thought out Master Plan designed to achieve the intelligent dispersal of population from the grossly overpopulated and unworkable Capital, Port au Prince to an agricultural based nation-wide network of small settlements must be produced.

I also agree that the arbitrary and tired Modernist 'formulas' and the hermetic repertoire of currently fashionable images must be protected from.
The danger of such is strong here, as Modernist ideology tends to find fertile ground in crises and instances of cultural displacement.

I would like to refer you to our premiated design
for the definition of Miami, Florida's 'Little Haiti' Competition or two decades ago (www.fruizarchitect.com) as example of the positive potential that exists in this lamentable situation.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6458688.post-39174793883899346722010-07-30T01:00:31.776-04:002010-07-30T01:00:31.776-04:00Luxembourg Gardens has formal and informal element...Luxembourg Gardens has formal and informal elements that combine for a wonderful whole. For the monument grounds, I think something more Victorian with lots of trees and winding paths with statuary, fountains, and stone gazebos, like you pictured would be more appropriate.
